These three pulley families can appear almost identical in a small photo, but the groove geometry and belt section are different. Replacement decisions should be made from the belt profile and dimensions, not from colour or spoke style.
A quick way to avoid the wrong section
Read the belt marking and measure its top width only as a cross-check. The machine drawing or original pulley marking is stronger evidence than a visual estimate.
Why SPA is common in general machinery
SPA sits between SPZ and SPB in the narrow-belt family, making it a practical choice for many mid-size industrial drives. That does not make it a universal substitute.
When SPZ makes more sense
Smaller drive envelopes and high rotational speed can favour SPZ when the belt rating and minimum pulley diameter allow it.
When SPB deserves review
Larger power demand or a design already built around SPB should stay with the larger section unless the whole drive is recalculated.
Interchangeability warning
A change of belt section normally means changing the pulley groove geometry as well. Do not install a different section belt into an existing groove merely because it can be forced into place.
