Compressor pulley selection starts with speed ratio and belt rating. The wrong diameter can overspeed or underspeed the compressor even when the pulley physically fits the shaft.
Use datum diameter for speed
Calculate the theoretical compressor speed from the driver and driven datum diameters. Outside diameter is mainly a clearance measurement.
Check the motor and compressor shafts
Both shaft bores, keyways and the taper-bush models need to be confirmed. A correct pulley on the wrong bush is still the wrong assembly.
Select grooves from the rated drive
Compressor starting load and duty can be demanding. Choose groove count using the belt manufacturer’s power-rating method and service factor.
Watch alignment and ventilation
Misalignment heats the belt and loads the bearings. Keep guards and cooling airflow as designed by the compressor manufacturer.
Useful RFQ data
Send motor kW, motor rpm, target compressor rpm, shaft diameters, centre distance, belt section and any existing pulley markings.
